SECOND GLANCE – HOUR LONG ONE ACT PLAY

It was a long time ago, Sam was still a kid, when he lost his grandmother, Amelia, to a car accident. His grandpa and best friend Jimmy was too drunk and had to be picked up by Amelia at the bar. She never made it to the bar and none of Jimmy’s kids or grandkids (including Sam) have paid him any attention since. It’s a compelling premise, right? In fact Sam intends to use it for his book. Only snag is that he won’t get published without Grandpa Jimmy’s side of the story being told too. It’s time for Sam to take a trip back home and hear Grandpa Jimmy out. Sam will likely run into his ex-girlfriend too and the truth of it is that he cannot fathom what other facts lie waiting for him. The good, the inevitable and the ugly truth in this  hour long one act play.

MAYA FROM MADURAI – ONE ACT DRAMA ABOUT DRUGS

Maya was a dealer. A drug dealer. He grew up in Madurai under the tutelage of hippie-type parents. They loved him. They still do and he does too. He saw them smoke it once and only once. That’s all it takes. That’s all it ever really takes. One go, one take in one act. They were smoking. Cannabis. He’d seen them that one time but they seemed to be accustomed to it. Cannabis, that is. It became Maya’s bread and butter. He lived for it and would surely die for it too. This is Maya and this drama is his story. From one puff to a life wasted in this short one act drama about drugs.

Maya from Madurai is an Indian play written by Naren Weiss. The play explores the life and death of a drug dealer, and marked the directorial debut of actress Pooja Devariya. It premiered at the 2013 edition of the Short and Sweet Festival in Chennai, India; where it won the Play of the Day award. Three days before script submission, director Devariya called former classmate Weiss and asked him to write something, describing what she had in mind.

The play subsequently toured the country as a part of The Park’s New Festival in 2013. South Indian theatre troupe Stray Factory took the one act play to six Indian cities, with four other short plays. The original production starred Venkatesh Harinathan, who also translated the play.

BESIDE THE KITCHEN TABLE – GHOST AND HORROR SCRIPT

Michael is Lily’s last hope. You see, she’s a ghost and has been for fourteen years. In this two-act drama, her haunt is the large kitchen of the Baker household and Michael is the son of Paul and Laura Baker. Lily has a score to settle and no one else but Michael is able to help her at this point. Robbed of her life at such a young age (she was a teenager) and unable to go on, Lily has spent her time trying to connect with the family that last saw her alive. While trying to be ‘’seen’’ she learns that she may yet have another chance at some things that were taken from her. As Lily and Michael grow closer, she reveals that she didn’t just disappear and that she was raped and murdered, right on the kitchen table where the family now sits in this ghost and horror script.

As for everything else she has missed out on, it isn’t up to her to decide what happens next but luckily for her, a ghost has another way to serve a helping of vengeance: her hands are cold and so is the heart that no longer beats. Thus, she must use the human to enact her revenge….

SNOW IN JULY – COLLECTION OF ONE ACT PLAYS

A collection of one act plays by American playwright James Campbell. From the comedic absurd to the dark and sinister, these plays are both thought provoking and enjoyable to stage.

Hossback: This satirical off the wall comedy rips off typical cowboys from the old west, or at least modern society’s idea of what cowboys actually were like by taking an over the top view of them. From the way they loved their hosses like real women, to their predilection for hanging ‘criminals’ of an description to their manner of speaking – all those cowboy traits we are so fond of are chewed up and spat out again.

Murder in the asylum: The patients and the staff in the local lunatic asylum are getting murdered one by one until there’s only two men standing. One of them’s the murderer…. But, since they’re mad as hatters, they both think it isn’t them.

Sunset on the Potomac: Under absurdia, but poignant comedy about a music teacher and her family, her loves, life and children at the end of which a dark twist is finally revealed.

Baboons: It’s the time of the Romans and those annoying Christians (sorry Baboons) keep getting in the way! Should they kill them like wild boars and baboons? Or do they put on a play?

First to see the lights go on: A drama about post natal depression and its consequences. When Frank meets Arlene at the bus stop and they strike up a conversation, Arlene seems both child like and innocent. But her innocence hides a deathly secret.

Jumping the league: A comedy for a small cast. A priest (who has a foul mouth) and his best friend in 1960’s Pre Vietnam have both decided, and chosen this day to tell each other that they are literally both ‘jumping the league’ and leaving their old lives behind forever.

The Restaurants are Screaming: In this period drama set at the end of the second world war, Ludwig has been living with his daughter, Marcia and his son in law, Joe for the past three months. The play focuses on an abusive father, who now he is old, struggles to understand the consequences of his actions as well as the effect he has on other people. The play draws parallels between his two adult children freeing themselves from their abusive father, the death of the old way of life and the rebirth of the new way of life as the allies win the war in 1945.

Style: A drama about a rough group of factory workers on the line and the day they get the news their factory is closing and their work is gone. It’s all they’ve ever known.

The Watch Below: A group of sailors on a boat in the war are isolated due to an outbreak of deadly meningitis. It’s a tension filled situation as the sick man is at first missing then aggressive and no one can get away.

COMEDY DRAMA ABOUT FAMILY

THE BEACH HOUSE – A COMEDY DRAMA ABOUT FAMILY

It’s meant to be a celebration of family and in particular, granddad Arthur’s birthday. Sure, Arthur and Ellen have been divorced a long time and he barely gets along with Abigail, his granddaughter, but at least Belinda is trying when it comes to her parents and children in this comedy drama about family.

It’s unfortunate really that Abigail and Jarvis, his grandson show their true and disingenuous reasons for attending the beach house celebration, in a situation that is unraveling almost as soon as they get to their home away from home. With a no-show father (Belinda’s husband who cares as much for the title as he does for Abigail) it seems Belinda is well and truly on her own as she tries desperately to keep a family as unified as ever. In this drama/comedy in one act, the odds are not so much in Belinda’s favour as a secret as old as Abigail threatens to tear the family completely apart…

THE WILTING PRESS – TWENTY MINUTE PLAY ABOUT LIFE AND HELPING OTHERS

Imagine if you had a problem, one that you couldn’t find a solution to. You don’t want to ‘look for help’ at this stage, preferring to try to sort it out yourself. What if you then went for a walk in the park?  On a bench a Wanderer jovially sits with a tattered book in this twenty minute play. The book is a wilting flower press full of the wanderer’s memories.  You sit down. You talk about love, family, life, and what it means to have a conversation that matters.

Three strangers encounter the Wanderer. Burdened by their respective circumstances, each Stranger shares their time and woes with the Wanderer, hoping to move forward.  And so the Wanderer, armed with words and a wilting press, mends these disillusioned hearts with one phrase: “Care to share your troubles?”

The wanderer asks only for a flower for their press from each stranger in return.  Will we ever find out why the Wanderer helps these people? Perhaps not. But maybe that isn’t important.

THE WRONG SIDE OF THE ROAD – DRAMA FOR TEENS ABOUT A CAR ACCIDENT

Imagine that, in a moment of thoughtlessness your life would change for ever, and would even be over.
It’s the holidays and three teens, Danny, Ben and Rachael are going to spend the holidays at the cottage owned by Danny’s father. Danny, egged on by Ben, has driven there in his father’s car without his father’s consent. Danny also hasn’t got a driving licence or insurance in this drama for teens about a car accident.

Just a matter of a few minutes from their destination, Danny takes a bend on the wrong side of the road, resulting in another car swerving out the way to avoid them and crashing, with fatalities highly likely. In a moment of panic, Danny doesn’t stop at the scene of the accident.

When Rachael arrives at the holiday cottage on her motorbike a little later she brings news. The car they hit had one survivor, a policeman. She then produces a gun she took from the scene of the crime. What she suggests next is unthinkable.

The wrong side of the road was was one of nine scripts short-listed in the 2009 Kenneth Branagh Drama Writing Award competition.

LOVE, NORMAN – A DRAMA FOR FOUR ACTORS ABOUT SUICIDE, FAMILY AND EVERYTHING THAT COMES WITH THAT

When Estelle decided to ‘dump’ her ill father Frank on her brother Norman for a few days while she would be out of town, she initially had no idea that a visit to Norman’s apartment would end up being the intervention, reckoning, counselling, cleansing and reunion session that the family didn’t plan for but certainly needed. Without a mother, Estelle would go on to overcompensate for the lack of one, Norman would lose his nerve without her presence in his life and their father would blame Norman for her death. In Love, Norman, a drama for four actors, Estelle and her family’s dysfunction are exposed in a major way all the while happening in Norman’s tiny apartment…this is Norman’s, not Estelle’s story after all. And in keeping with the theme, it is Norman’s attempt at suicide, homosexuality and alleged son, Jerome which the play reveals to us all and grapples with in the most sincere way.

This is him, this is Norman and he sends his love. A beautifully written drama that is both challenging and human at the same time.

It’s the late eighties and Mark is infected with HIV, a new supposedly lethal virus that affects the immune system. Mark, a typical gay man living with this new form of 1980’s plague, has begun to invest in all sorts of cures from taking a huge volume of ascorbic acid every day (to boost his immune system) to paying a quack doctor known as Dr Purgess to cure him with all manner of weird and wonderful drugs. Dr Purgess does not believe in the power of Ascorbic acid at all and instead arrives regularly armed with the latest cure all drug in this dark comedy play about HIV AIDS.

Mark’s housemate and companion Stephan both loves Mark and tolerates his hypochondria (which may not be unfounded) and tries to get Mark out and away from dwelling on his health all the time. DR REASON – SCI-FI PLAY SCRIPT ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH AND MIND CONTROL

Dr. Rachel Junger, a psychologist is trying to find out why her former patients have devoted their lives to a revolutionary movement called ‘The Analog Underground’ when she’s called on to counsel a man with no past who believes he comes from a future where all of humanity shares a single consciousness. Is his vision a heaven or a hell? After the strange man makes an impossible escape, Dr. Junger has to find him to find out what happened that time long ago in the near future.

The man, simply known as Simon, reveals to her that he tried to break into the Cybernetics Lab of the medical facility she works for. Little does Dr. Junger know that her interview with Simon (who thinks he is from the future) would be the catalyst to events that would change her life and the world, forever in this sci-fi play script about mental health and mind control.

Simon, a guinea pig, for some sinister testing within the Cybernetics Department, reveals his true nature as Dr Junger encourages him to do so. His current psyche is a result of a growth that’s being used to control his mind and rationale by an organisation known only as the Singularity. But then Simon disappears as it’s revealed that other very specific patients whom Dr Junger has encountered, have also been experimented on by the Singularity. Dr Junger gets closer to understanding why she must escape the Singularity’s clutches but initially, no less closer to understanding why the Analog Underground resistance movement has chosen her to be at the helm of a budding revolution. It’s a fight against time, for the future and for the people.

The heroes of the revolution never really know they are.

WHEN WAS 1916? – IRISH PLAY ABOUT THE EASTER RISING

1916 – a time of turmoil when the Irish sought independence from Britain and they were prepared to fight for it. It was mid world war 1.

“They did not expect it to win power, what they planned was a spectacle, a gesture to transform public opinion,” he said.

Pat, an Irishman living now yearns to write about the Easter Rising of 1916.   As an Irishman himself Pat understands the importance of what he wants to do. Even if he were to overlook the significance of the certain elements he wants to portray, his trusty (and let’s face it) annoying laptop companion, Nat, would never let him forget about them in this Irish play about the Easter Rising.

Pat is challenged by Nat to delve deeper into the exploration of the Easter Rising by choosing to write a play. According to Nat the events were a momentous theatrical occasion and so Pat has all the material he can use at his disposal. Together, they study a typical Irish family, political figures, and military personnel to get the most colourful picture of the occurrences of the Irish countrymen’s bid for an independent republic.

The burden of a writer is rarely over even when the project is complete and lucky for Pat, Nat is with him every step of the way and beyond!

DR KRITZINGER’S 12 O’CLOCK – AWARD WINNING PLAY ABOUT NAZI GERMANY

The fascinating, if horrific account of how a group of less than twenty men in a meeting changed the world and impacted its history forever.

In this one act play, the matter at hand has to do with the Jewish untermenschen and their existence in European society. The drama revolves around the men at the 1942 Wannsee Conference seeking a permanent solution to expel the Jews from Europe and reinstate the Aryan race at the top, where the men believe they should be in this award winning play about Nazi Germany.

It is a scenario we’ve seen time and again: how a few men can make disastrous decisions in the name of beliefs that they think the world ought to live by, for the greater good. This meeting resulted in the Jewish genocide known as the Holocaust. As a thoughtful Kritzinger predicted, more than just a few million Jewish lives would be lost ‘for good’ after that meeting.

THE PASSION OF MARY – AMERICAN HISTORICAL PLAY WITH TOPICAL ISSUES

Forty years before the Salem witch trials, Massachusetts’ Puritans were hanging other Christians for slight differences of opinion. The play THE PASSION OF MARY details the importance of the Separation of Church and State in early America through the battles and life story of a young woman that builds self-awareness and confidence while keeping her sense of humor intact in this American historical play.

“It wasn’t just witches they were hanging, but their own.” This is the story of Quaker Mary Dyer, who was hanged by Puritans in the Boston Commonwealth in the 1600s.

Featuring a cast of historical characters including early leaders Roger Williams and Anne Hutchinson, plus England’s Lord Oliver Cromwell, the play starts as Mary buries her child that was stillborn and disfigured. Within weeks Mary’s world crumbles, first seeing her best friend kicked out of Boston where they had settled for over 16 years. Then the colony’s leaders discover the dead baby, and publicize to the entire community that Mary gave birth to a monster. She, too, is excommunicated, and scorned by her neighbors.

Mary ends up in Providence, Rhode Island, with others that were kicked out of Boston. The open-minded Roger Williams invites Mary to visit England with him. It is their hope to create a positive relationship with the Native Americans that live in the new colony.

In England, Mary becomes versed in the loving deeds of Quaker beliefs, and helps soothe the country’s leader Lord Oliver Cromwell through his many fears. Though respected in England, she wants to return home to the new world where her family lives.

Upon her return, Mary’s ship lands in Boston where the Puritans have declared the Quaker religion as illegal. She is arrested. Because her husband still has political ties with the Commonwealth, she is set free and ordered to never return. Mary returns, and is arrested yet again. One of her party is put to death. Mary’s husband, who has been fighting to keep his wife at home, realizes the Puritans’ cruelty, and finally offers his blessing for Mary to return again. His support allows her to sacrifice her life for religious freedom.

Upon Mary’s death, she is welcomed to the afterlife by her child, the one that the leaders of Boston referred to as a “monster.”
