THIRTY DEEP – AMERICAN ONE ACT PLAY – A COMEDY-DRAMA

It’s the last day of business for Guns ‘n Stuff Taxidermist. Business hasn’t been great lately and they’ve been forced to close down. (There’s a Smoothie Place coming in in their spot instead) All Montgomery has to do is put the finishing touches on a beaver he’s been stuffing before he bids the old place farewell. His wife, Cookie and lifetime friend, Whiskey are helping him pack up everything in the shop in this American one act play.

Enter Janice Rothstein with a very unusual request, which she’s willing to pay plenty for. In fact before he takes the job, she offers him $30 000. Enough to keep the business going, for sure. Enough for them to live on for quite a while. Only problem is, it’s the first time Montgomery’s ever been asked to stuff this kind of animal. Our kind.

TO BE A TREE – PLAY FOR CHILDREN ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT

In this one act play for children about the environment, author Matthew Konkel explores the fascinating realm that is a kid’s imagination. You see, Abby Greene is quite sure of herself. It is something common in fifth graders – and all children under twelve years of age: that unfailing confidence in themselves.

It’s easy to think others will think the same way you do. Abby learns that this isn’t always the case when she not only decides to be a tree when she grows up but also informs the world around her of this decision. She is of course mocked by her peers.  Through her adversity and resolve, Abby and her peers come to acknowledge the importance of both technology and the natural environment.

Abby knows why she wants to be a tree and when you learn her reasons you may just want to join her too. To Be a Tree is a one-act play meant to be performed by children, for children.

At what point did you put the childish things away for good? But more importantly, why?

STUFFED PANDA – MONOLOGUE ABOUT ALCOHOLISM

A monologue about alcoholism for a single male or female actor. Riley is waiting in line and notices a father and daughter in the line in front. The father is being all goofy and the daughter is at that stage where she’s just totally embarrassed to even have her father with her. He secretly takes a panda and hides it behind his back as she tries to see what he’s doing.

They leave with the panda and Riley decides to call her/his dad. He answers but soon falls down and Riley realises it’s not the first time he’s fallen down, too drunk to stand, and that Riley was never that child with the panda and never would be.

A sad monologue about growing up with a parent who is an alcoholic.

WHAT HAPPENS IN THE SKY – DRAMA ABOUT SUSPECTED INFIDELITY

In this drama about suspected infidelity, Jonathan is to some extent obliged to have Brett his publisher over for a drink and his wife Madeline is quite irritated at having the publisher in their home. The evening gets off to a pleasant enough start when the drinks flow and the trio engages in a light conversation about the general goings-on of life.

Brett soon divulges his real reasons for wanting to see Jonathan at his home and with the truth that his job may slightly be in the balance, finally out in the open, things go from uncomfortable, to cringe worthy to completely awry in a hot minute. The suspicious air surrounding Madeline and Brett’s relationship to one another grows even thicker with apprehension as Jonathan’s better judgement is severely impaired and lines between professional and intimate are completely blurred. Jonathan’s fears for the worst are put to the test as he questions his marriage and his sanity in two acts.

In more ways than one, marriage is a certain death.

BERTIE – ONE ACT PLAY FOR A CAST OF THREE

Marcia Jameson, divorcee has put up an advert for a room mate in her local paper. What she’s looking for is company – someone to go shopping with, to the theatre with and generally be a friend. When she receives an answer to her ad, she’s happy but quickly a bit put out to find that her prospective tenant is in fact an older man in his fifties called Bertie. Despite Bertie’s assurances that they’ll get on like a house on fire, she’s hesitant to accept him initially and then decides to give him a chance in this one act play for a cast of three.

Bertie quickly moves in and makes himself at home. A little too quickly, perhaps, but then he does come with impeccable references. Marcia’s best friend, Shelly is at first surprised, then suspicious, but when Bertie wins her over by promising to invite a famous friend who is well known in the art circles to Shelly’s exhibition, she welcomes him with open arms.

Bertie is everything Marcia needs and more. Helpfully cooking for her when she’s late at work, mixing her drinks, clearing out her garage within a day of moving in. He’s too good to be true.

Or is he…..?

TUMBLEWEED – COMEDY PLAY SET IN THE WILD WEST

Tumbleweed tells the story of love, family, betrayal and murder in North West America. There’s a new sheriff in town and he may just be what the town of Bannack, Montana needs and desperately so. The outlaws, namely ‘The Innocents’ have one motive: gold. The gold is to be found, according to the ‘prophetic’ Chief Raging Bear, whose daughter has been kidnapped by ‘The Innocents’, on a creek and the outlaws will stop at nothing to get that land in this play set in the wild west.

When the previous sheriff is murdered amongst other townspeople by ‘The Innocents’, Calvin saves the life of the previous sheriff’s daughter, Jessie, in the nick of time. He is consequently shoved into the position of sheriff and begins work, together with the help of the Bannack’s best (and sometimes worst) on bringing ‘The Innocents’ to justice.

FINAL CONVERSATIONS – PLAY FOR DRAMA SCHOOL

Final Conversations is about a Mother’s regret, wanting to roll back time to attain one perfect moment, one real conversation with her Son before he’s accidentally killed. The set up is simple: one day before school Mother suddenly “knows” that Son has an hour to live. With a “kitchen sink” approach, she attempts to change fate, using comedic often absurd methods to reach Son, none of which alters destiny or brings peace in this play for drama school.

An interview with playwright Rita Anderson about Final Conversations.

PRODUCTION HISTORY:

Jars – drama about love between two women

What’s a kiss between friends? For Heely it is everything. Evidence that her feelings for Shyne weren’t a daydream and vice versa. Evidence that their childhood adventures together were as real as the fireflies Heely wants to spend forever after catching, with Shyne at her side… and their dog – as it should be. And evidence that a southern wife’s story can have its roots in the most unlikely soils, roots that ought to decay now that Shyne has her husband aka ‘him,’ roots that are thriving into a forbidden flower as Shyne still ‘visits’ with her ‘old childhood friend’ and a grown flower that basks in the radiating light of the love between two women who were not meant to fall in love. So is the one act drama about love between two women telling the story of Shyne and Heely, called Jars. It is an act of passion, torment and mostly, of hope.

From one to the other, paths had crossed, blood was spilled and they would forever be lovers.

SEXBOT – SCIENCE FICTION DRAMA SCRIPT

In Sexbot, a science fiction drama script in three acts, we are introduced to Pris – an artificial human, engineered with the DNA of famously deceased actress Soledad Xavier, for one purpose and one purpose alone: to make the God Emperor (a superhuman messiah) fall in love with her, at least, according to Viggo, a spy and the only person that Pris has encountered since her awakening.

Pris is the sixth test subject to be given this somewhat thankless job and she comes with the works; she is a lot smarter than her predecessors, she has actual memories of Soledad’s life, a deeper capacity towards emotional intelligence (both inward and outward) and a heightened sense of her innermost feelings, as well as the ability to effectively express them. With all her upgrades, she is seemingly equipped with all the tools that would enable her to successfully seduce the emotionally juvenile God King but Pris has her doubts and fears and while Viggo acknowledges the truths behind her feelings of uncertainty, Pris may be the only option available so that the God Emperor may come to be completely under the cause’s political control.

Sexbot explores the complicated nature of human sexuality, human nature,  the feelings and thoughts surrounding love and the dramatic lengths some will go to exploit it.

Is the purpose of life reserved only for the living?

ADAM AND YOSHI – AWARD WINNING ONE ACT COMEDY-DRAMA

Trying to pick up the pieces while going through a divorce, Adam moves back in with his mother. The arrangement gives him the liberty and creative freedom to write, as he tries to come to terms with the loss of his other half which interestingly enough coincides with the appearance of Yoshi, his new girlfriend… kind of. Yoshi and Adam have a normal relationship; they met at a comic’s convention, she pops in through his window consistently dressed in the same superhero garb (mask included), they fight and talk and talk while fighting and then they make love in this award winning comedy-drama.

Yoshi’s full name, ‘’Yoshi, Warrior Princess of the Divine Order of Nesparotu of the Kiuan on the planet Darden’’ maintains that she is from the planet Darden and her purpose is to copulate with an Earthling, so as to impregnate her. Okay, so not much of a ”normal” relationship, but this comedy-drama in one act does explore the dynamics that every person in the world goes and grows through when they choose, yet again, to open their hearts.

When Yoshi reveals a shocking truth to Adam he faces a future that is more uneasy than he had anticipated his life would become after his divorce.

THE CHRONICLES OF JACK – CONTEMPORARY SOUTH AFRICAN PLAYS

In Johannesburg, anything can happen, everything can change and everyone knows it. Jackson ‘’Jack’’ Makhubo, a 23 year old resident of the Eastern Cape decides that he will not be attending initiation school in the mountains and that he’ll instead be embarking on his studies in drama at a university in Johannesburg. Unfortunately his mother then throws him out of their family home making it possibly the last memory of home he ever has.

In The Chronicles of Jack a boy becomes a man in a way he did not expect when he is thrown into the chaos of modern Johannesburg’s university life. Jack is robbed, attends a ‘Fees Must Fall’ rally that has him subsequently expelled and discovers the true identity of his father, who has largely been absent from the boy’s life, all within the space of a week. REGICIDE – FANTASY PLAY SCRIPT ABOUT REVOLUTION. AND MURDER

There are those who hate the King and Queen. They have their reasons. Mainly, the violence, bloodshed, murder and oppression they have lived with under the monarchs rule. ‘’Those’’ like Zanna and Lucien, belong to a brotherhood that seeks to destroy the King and Queen once and for all. In Regicide, a play in three acts, their lives revolve around their resolve to bring power back to the people, their respect for the authorities who will carry out the order for the final blow and the sweet revolution of retribution that will follow the simple task that must be done quickly and quietly – kill the King and Queen’s new born son in this fantasy play script.

The logic, according to Zanna and Lucien’s Commander (Jacob) is that without an heir, the wretched kingdom will surely collapse and so Lucien and Zanna must ensure that the threat is completely annihilated. ‘’The Threat’’, merely a day or two old, who has done nothing but exist thus far, who understands nothing’ and is as harmless as can be, must be killed and it is Lucien who has volunteered to do it. But can he? … Could you?
