BERENICE – STAGE PLAY ADAPTATION OF AN EDGAR ALLAN POE STORY
“Berenice” is the story of Egeaus, a self-proclaimed Visionary who suffers from a an obsessive condition known as monomania, which makes him fall into obessesive trance like states for hours. Egeaus lives in a large mansion with his beautiful step cousin, Berenice. Because of his illness, Egeaus knows that she will never be able to love him as he loves her, as they are far from equal – she is beautiful and his condition makes him ineligible for her hand in this stage play adaptation of an Edgar Allan Poe Story.
One fateful day, he receives a visit from a mysterious stranger named Horatio Glum. Horatio offers to help Egeaus reclaim his love for his step-cousin Berenice… but for a price. Selfishly Egeaus agrees. Horatio instills in the perfect Berenice a debilitating disease, ruining her beauty and thus making her Egeaus’ equal. In a moment of weakness Egeaus proposes to Berenice. However, every bargain comes with a price, and in this case, it’s his immortal soul. But just when will Horatio come to collect it?
