Description
THE PHILOSOPHY OF CAVEMEN – PHILOSOPHICAL COMEDY ABOUT HUMAN SELF AWARENESS
A philosophical comedy about human awareness that sees us at the very beginnings of humankind’s journey to self-identification. Bret and Tad are two long-time friends and are hunters and sharers of their cave. They also live with Winston – somewhat less refined than they are but he’s a damn good hunter. The play opens with Bret and Tad asking each other about what it means to have awareness. And we soon discover that Bret really wants to spend his days thinking about life, about the giant circle in the sky. Tad just really wants to be comfortable…and Winston ends up having the big idea that will change the way men live…forever. This is a one act play with three scenes. A minimalist set – we are in a cave after all.
Each of these characters can be seen to be representative of the last three major phases in the evolution of man: Winston self-evolving from is Homo habilis to Homo erectus, Tad is Homo neanderthalensis and Bret is Homo sapien. This is a play about the birth of rationale, the thinking man. This play is reminiscent of Waiting for Godot. Luckily for us it is far less abstract. In this case Godot is the character’s willingness to venture beyond the cave, think big thoughts, and even invent the wheel. AND IT HAPPENS!
