Description
GIRL IN THE HOOD – MODERN PANTOMIME WITH A MIX OF FAIRYTALE CHARACTERS
In this modern pantomime with a mix of fairytale characters, Red Riding Hood is commissioned by Mother (the dame) to visit Nana, who lives in a cottage in the woods. She is accompanied by her friend with criminal tendencies, aka Goldilocks (currently wanted by the authorities for breaking and entering). Menacing the good guys, are the Evil Queen and her henchmen, who roam the land taxing and bullying poor people.
Riding Hood and Goldilocks shockingly discover Nana has eaten by a wolf, but, just as they are about to cut her out of the wolf’s stomach, they are informed by a forest ranger that Big Bad Wolves are an endangered species, so they cannot harm him. The only way to get Nana out is by magic, so Riding Hood and Goldilocks go looking for a witch. This leads them to the castle of Sleeping Beauty, where they also run into Prince Charming, who is out looking for a wife. Upon waking, Sleeping Beauty spurns Prince Charming, and instead falls for Riding Hood.
Still in need of a witch, the heroes head to the tower where Rapunzel is locked up by the Evil Witch. Still in need of a wife, Prince Charming goes with them. At the tower, the heroes outwit both the Evil Witch and the Evil Queen, and free Rapunzel, who then agrees to marry Prince Charming. Not surprisingly, the Evil Witch doesn’t want to help Riding Hood rescue Nana.
Riding Hood, Goldilocks and Sleeping Beauty return to Mother’s house where they devise a way to bring back Nana and defeat the Evil Queen and her henchmen.
The pantomime is written for a British audience, but there are only a few topical references, and these can easily be substituted if necessary. Please note: There are some adult humour jokes in the play which will go above children’s head but if produced by a secondary school they can be omitted.
