Description
PEOPLE’S WAR – A DRAMA ABOUT THE START OF COVID 19
Set in Wuhan, China, in early 2020, Yu-Min and An-Mei Zhou are celebrating the Chinese New Year with their neighbors, Shao-Long and Su-Nan Yan, along with their son, Chee-Ying. An-Mei works as a nurse in Wuhan Central Hospital, and grows concerned over the novel coronavirus that’s dominating the headlines. Strictly forbidden to spread rumors regarding the virus, An-Mei and Chee-Ying bond in secret over their shared fear of what the Chinese
government is hiding from its people, much to the dismay of Yu-Min, who suspects the two may be having an affair in this drama about the start of Covid 19.
He orders Chee-Ying to stay away from his family, but not before An-Mei shares shocking video evidence from the hospital with Chee-Ying, which confirms that the government is underreporting the coronavirus death count. But things change when An-Mei tests positive for the disease, and the family is quarantined inside their apartment. Chee-Ying posts the videos from An-Mei online, which gets both of them arrested. Yu-Min is arrested as well, and he and his wife are depicted in alternating scenes getting ruthlessly questioned and beaten by officers. Yu-Min is eventually released, but the play ends when he and Tao are tragically placed back into confinement by the state.
