When they reach the pub the barmaid May Corfield is down in the dumps. On further questioning the boys learn from her that her husband Billy has gone away to fight. The boys are shocked and amazed. Billy is just no soldier. Indeed, we learn later that Billy has been killed in action and the harsh reality of war shows its ugly face and  what war from a working class perspective really means.
