It is the early 1990s, and the Schoenfeldts are an all-American family that have a long-standing family tradition; every generation one of the members go to war. From the Franco-Prussian War to the Vietnam War each generation has sent a son to fight. Robert Schoenfeldt is 18 and deciding on his path. His sister Vera has just passed away and his parents Helen and Ernest are still reeling from the aftermath. The truth surrounding Vera’s death is murky though Robert knows more than he lets on – he must confront his choices as well as his feeling’s for Janet (his sister’s friend). Will Robert continue on the path of his father and grandfather or will he be the first the finally break the chain in this drama about war?

This longer two-act family drama revolves around the Schoenfeldts and their family history of war, death, love, and the wrong choices. The setting of the home may lull you into a false sense of security – nothing is as put together as it seems. The truth is the war is not just fought on foreign soil, but requires each of us to choose our sides in the war at home.

Set: A large room which combines a living room and a dining room. In one half there is a couch, a chair, some book shelves and chest of drawers, coffee table with some newspapers and magazines and an archway which leads to bedrooms. Behind the couch there is a fireplace with a mantle on which sits an American flag, folded into a triangle, and a photograph of a teenage girl, VERA. In the other half there is a dining room table with chairs and several cabinets filled with dishes. In the middle of the room, next to the living room chair, a small table holds a telephone. A front door is at the back. There are windows on either side of the looking out at a desert style front yard. It is the winter of 1992.

Level of difficulty: 8/10 – A Heavy Drama relies on aspects of light and shadow which build to a climax. It cannot have the same intensity and tone throughout or it will not hold the audience’s attention
