SOUVENIR FROM COPENHAGEN – A LGBTQ LOVE STORY

Souvenir from Copenhagen is a dramatic memory play that examines the beginning, the end, and all the incidents in between of a relationship in this LGBTQ love story. David is a young 20-something charming and talented actor who meets Jonathan, a middle-aged accountant. David is our guide through the ups and downs of their relationship. David is on his way to great success, but haunted by the memory of his husband, Jonathan, who committed suicide in Copenhagen, in the same hotel where the two men spent their honeymoon. The question remains: why did Jonathan, a successful CPA, hang himself without leaving a suicide note? And why did he do it in Copenhagen where he and David spent their honeymoon? David has to find the answer.

Jonathan is intense in nature and soon falls in love with David; not quite believing his luck at being chosen by a man that so many others want. David is often glib, self-absorbed and happy to be the object of Jonathan’s idolatry. But everything sours as Jonathan becomes overly possessive. A lifetime of struggle, pain, heartbreak, joy and career choices are packed into the couple’s two short years. In the end, David learns that he cannot just be the beloved, but that he must also be the lover.

Author: Michael James

Type: Two-Act Plays

Genre: LGBTQ love story, drama, romance

Cast: 10: 7m, 3w.

Ages of the actors: Ages thirteen to Seventies

Suitable for: Adults

Length: 150 minutes (Two and a half hours)

Set: Souvenir from Copenhagen is a memory play; therefore, the set design should be spare. At center stage are two easy chairs with, in between, a small round table covered with a tablecloth on which rests an elegant, decorative cremation urn for human ashes. Somewhere upstage, stands an old, open armoire with various props and articles of clothing to be used by the actors. Since the action of the play unfolds in several short, episodic scenes and in different locations, the lighting design should be varied but kept simple. A few stage lighting effects are suggested in the script, but these can be ignored or changed by the lighting designer and stage director; other lighting effects may be added. Occasionally, some photographs or images are projected onto the back wall; these should be used sparingly.

Level of Difficulty:  8/10: The play focusses on relationships between people and the actors portaying them should be real and in the moment
