IN THE KNOW -COMEDY ABOUT KNOWING THE FUTURE

Everyone’s heard the adage, “If I only knew then what I know now”. But what if you actually did know? Set in the ‘not-too-distant’ future, where nearly every young person has bought an artificial older version of themselves off of Amazon (of course), In the Know, a new play by Mark aloysius Kenneally, examines what life might be like if, rather than a journey of growth, it were a hodgepodge of spoiler alerts. When Dallas and Hanna attend their best friend Posey’s dinner party, they naturally bring along their older selves. However, the feast quickly dissolves into a fiasco when Posey proclaims her animosity towards these ‘future selves’ and then reveals what she’s done about it. How differently would you live your life if you knew at 20 what you know at 40? Or 50? Or beyond? Would that kind of knowledge necessarily be a good thing? A comedy about knowing the future.

Set: The kitchen/dining room/living room of a modest, yet extremely cramped loft apartment in a non-descript metropolitan city. The kitchen furnishings, i.e. the refrigerator and stove can merely be suggested, as can the barely half-stocked bar on the counter space that semi-separates the kitchen from the living room. The loveseat in the living room should be so minuscule that it barely counts as a piece of furniture. A thin front door leads offstage right, while a second even thinner doorway stage left leads to an offstage bathroom and bedroom. The main thing is that the confined space be a breeding ground for claustrophobia.

Level of difficulty: 7/10 – creating comic tension as secrets are revealed.
