LOVE, NORMAN – A DRAMA FOR FOUR ACTORS ABOUT SUICIDE, FAMILY AND EVERYTHING THAT COMES WITH THAT

When Estelle decided to ‘dump’ her ill father Frank on her brother Norman for a few days while she would be out of town, she initially had no idea that a visit to Norman’s apartment would end up being the intervention, reckoning, counselling, cleansing and reunion session that the family didn’t plan for but certainly needed. Without a mother, Estelle would go on to overcompensate for the lack of one, Norman would lose his nerve without her presence in his life and their father would blame Norman for her death. In Love, Norman, a drama for four actors, Estelle and her family’s dysfunction are exposed in a major way all the while happening in Norman’s tiny apartment…this is Norman’s, not Estelle’s story after all. And in keeping with the theme, it is Norman’s attempt at suicide, homosexuality and alleged son, Jerome which the play reveals to us all and grapples with in the most sincere way.

This is him, this is Norman and he sends his love. A beautifully written drama that is both challenging and human at the same time.

ASCORBIC ACID FREAK – DARK COMEDY PLAY ABOUT HIV

It’s the late eighties and Mark is infected with HIV, a new supposedly lethal virus that affects the immune system. Mark, a typical gay man living with this new form of 1980’s plague, has begun to invest in all sorts of cures from taking a huge volume of ascorbic acid every day (to boost his immune system) to paying a quack doctor known as Dr Purgess to cure him with all manner of weird and wonderful drugs. Dr Purgess does not believe in the power of Ascorbic acid at all and instead arrives regularly armed with the latest cure all drug in this dark comedy play about HIV AIDS.

Mark’s housemate and companion Stephan both loves Mark and tolerates his hypochondria (which may not be unfounded) and tries to get Mark out and away from dwelling on his health all the time. Enter Wanda and Julie from Mark’s old theatre days who offer him a chance to get back on stage, something that would definitely take his mind off of everything.

But their plans may just be put on hold by Dr Purgess’ latest cure, which may be just the opposite!

TWISTED LUCY FANS – ONE ACT DARK COMEDY ABOUT LUCILLE BALL FANS

It’s 1989.  Lucille Ball, the iconic actress and star of “I Love Lucy” has just died. Italian-American (not that it matters… much) writer and prince of princes, Alex, is being interviewed for his contributions to gay culture and his work as a novelist in this dark comedy about Lucille Ball fans.  Though he’s not quite a successful author, who’s really, keenly, seriously keeping tabs on that point?

Enter (literally, into the interview) Todd,  Mike’s diva extraordinaire of a friend, who believes Mike is at most a sketchy if not at the least unreliable in his knowledge of everything gay and in particular the life and times of the gay goddess Lucille Ball. The young, straight and very handsome Kyle should be interviewing Todd instead, according to Todd. It seems, however, that all of  Alex’s associates, friends and brother Mike want in on the interview, and they take over the conversation.

Kyle bravely and patiently soldiers on through the frustrating, interesting and brutally honest telling of the nitty gritty of what, who and how a gay man exists in the world. It isn’t until a shocking scandal befalls the unsung author that Kyle realizes he just may have an exclusive on his hands. He also believes the scandal will catapult the romance novelist into a media sensation-which is guaranteed to increase the sales and interest of Alex’s novels!

Oh and then at some point when tensions could not get any higher the instigator of incest, overly-degenerate ‘degenerate’ and obvious source of ‘beastly’ desires amongst these men,  Mike,  finds a gun. Mike aims it at Alex’s newest (really new, even for him) lover Stefano. Someone gets shot… and it ain’t Stefano.

JUAN AND EMMETT – TRAGIC LGBT LOVE STORY SCRIPT

The hardest pills to swallow are the ones we recognise well; it is difficult to accept the life your heart did not expect. Even more difficult to see the life you could be living as it passes you by and most difficult to dare explore that life. Emmett is a father, husband to Linda and a successful lawyer who lives, yes, but is not really alive…until he meets Juan. Younger, beautiful and bursting with joie de vivre, Emmett cannot deny the attraction he feels to this man; he must talk to him, befriend him, love him, protect him, save him. In this two-act tragic LGBT love story script, loneliness is dissected to reveal that even the simplest or briefest encounters, can provide a long-lasting cure to a disease that still goes otherwise undetected, even today. The ache in Emmett’s soul led him to Juan’s heart, but even a heart as young as Juan’s can struggle to accept the life (love) he could (should) be living.

Two lives, six stories, one tragedy.

MARVIN’S FETISH – GAY DRAMA FOR TWO ACTORS

For one night you would have yourself a married man. One elegant night he would be yours. Yours to caress, laugh with, divulge your darkest secrets to and indulge in your sweetest fantasies with.
One night. One night only. Marvin had this one night planned out to a T; from the manner in which John would address him and others around them, to what he would wear, Marvin left nothing to be
desired, after all he was paying for the ‘services’ of a flawlessly masculine man; he was paying for the ‘services’ of John.

In this gay drama for two actors, we discover what a burning passion for the popular high school jock has become for old Marvin. But (“but’s” seem to be the norm for these tricky transactions) there was more to it than a payment received when it came to Johns’ M.O. And his M.O. would prove a bit too fabulous for the one night Marvin had prepared.

Marvin’s Fetish achieved finalist status in Tennessee Williams’ prestigious one-act play festival in New Orleans, and has been hailed as one of the most original two-character gay plays that has ever been written and as one of the most clever and unpredictable psychological thrillers of recent times.

Marvin’s Fetish has enjoyed three performances: The LGBT Center at 208 West 13th Street, New York City, Kairo’s Poety Café at 81 Christopher Street, New York City, and Moonfire (courtesy of Amethyst Nemzoff) at 305 Seventh Avenue, New York City. The last two readings were directed by Alan Baxter and featured DeAngelo Justice (as Marvin Casper) and Mark Parker (as John Corelli).

LOVE IS A STRANGER – BRITISH ONE ACT DRAMA ABOUT FORBIDDEN LOVE

Vivian is a young transgender call girl who has fallen in love for the first time with one of her clients. She dreams of them running away together and has high hopes, until it all comes crashing down around her because of a huge publicity scandal. Her client, it turns out, never gave her his real name and he is, in fact a famous MP, with a wife and a little girl. He is shamed by the press and loses everything, including his life. The play begins after their dirty secret has been made public and deals with three very different characters – Clive, the destroyed MP, Vivian, the call girl and Lucia, a burnt out publicist whose aim it is to reap a profit from the scandal and get Vivian to tell her side of the story in this British one act drama.

A great three hander that explores the human condition: How we deal with sudden awful changes in circumstances. Some will profit, some will fight and some will despair. It’s what at the end of that road that counts.
