I have written a number of plays for play festivals, as well as read through hundreds of plays on the internet, and I realized there is gap in the publishing industry where good authors struggle to get their plays published. So I have created an online play publishing company that will publish and sell plays!

Family Exercise – short one act dramas

FAMILY EXERCISE – SHORT ONE ACT DRAMAS

This short one act play, written entirely in free verse is an excellent short festival play. It highlights a typical family at the moment when everyone in the family finds out a big secret – that ‘dad’ has been having an affair with his son’s school teacher and that they have an illegitimate three year old son together. It is told from the son’s perspective as the events unfold in front of him. The mother, father, daughter and her Pilot boyfriend are active participants in the son’s simply told story. Great example of short one act dramas.

This is a one act family drama about a husband and wife who  have moved to the USA in order to attain ‘the good life’ and yet live past each other, remaining happy in their own little worlds. All seems to be going as normal when Frank  receives a mysterious phone call.  He is not exactly sure who it is that called him and set a very important appointment for later the very same day. He is told it is a matter of life or death that he is at the appointment, and so reluctantly he agrees and cancels his golf game to be there.  June, his wife, who tends to be a bit self obsessed and materialistic, assumes it is a big promotion from work with a great move and loads more money. Shapeless – a full length one act dark satire about body size

SHAPELESS – A FULL LENGTH ONE ACT PLAY

Shapeless is a full length one act play within a play about body image and eating disorders. In this play, four actors are trying to put on a comedy play that deals with body size and shape.  Each actress is of a particular size – there is a slightly anorexic girl, a girl with a medium figure and one that is quite overweight. The male character, Mike has written the script and in the play that he has written, he highlights those things that ‘aren’t talked about’ in society, openly mocking the very large and the very thin. The characters bring their own personal experiences and angst to their performances which leads to a build up of tension between the girls as they begin to run each other down ‘in the play’ but start taking it personally in real life.  Although the script the players are putting on is comedic, I would class this play as a drama or a very dark satire.

SHAPELESS was produced by Weird Sister Productions at the Tarragon Theatre in Toronto and had a very successful run there. Then it was produced again for the National Eating Disorder Awareness Week at the Robert Gill Theatre in Toronto.

THE CONDITION –  ONE ACT DRAMEDY SCRIPTS

In this art festival style play set in a park, Roger, the central character is constantly harassed by various members of the public, some of whom he knows and some of who he is meeting for the first time. Each character that joins Roger in this one act drama script, interacts with him in a way that allows Roger to reflect on his own life and who he is.  Many of the characters are humorous in their outlook on life, in contrast to Roger. As the play culminates with a twist, the audience will get to understand exactly why Roger is where he is and who the man inside is.

This one act drama play is ideal for festivals as it requires minimal set and is largely dependent on the skill of the actors.

The Mistress of Wholesome – one act comedy script where ‘Mistress’ takes on ‘Wife’

one act comedy script

THE MISTRESS OF WHOLESOME – a one act comedy script where ‘mistress’ takes on ‘wife.’

In this one act comedy script,  Gwen, ‘the mistress’ surprises Margaret, ‘the wife’ of Leland, a prominent cardiologist in their home and holds her hostage using an antique musket. According to Gwen, Leland has now fallen back in love with Margaret as the couple has gotten closer in their efforts to adopt a baby.  Gwen is naturally ‘very put out’ by this and  wants Margaret to convince Leland to fall back in love with his mistress so that things can be the same as they were for the past few years.  Margaret, who is desperate for a baby sees Leland playing ‘the good and attentive husband’ as the only way that she will ever manage to adopt a child and naturally refuses.

Things get even more complicated in this one act comedy script when a lady from the adoption agency arrives to interview Leland and Margaret and to screen them as potential parents. When it turns out that Leland is actually locked in the trunk of Gwen’s car across town, the two women must act fast to salvage a situation that is going downhill at a rate of knots!

The Mistress of Wholesome has been staged at the Little Theatre of Alexandria and at Under St. Marks in New York City. Read about playwright Jacob Appel

Author:  Jacob Appel

Type: One Act Play

Genre: Dry character driven one act comedy script

Length: Approximately 60 minutes

Number of Actors:  3F, three women

Ages of actors:   20’s – 40’s – the two main characters are in their late thirties and the social worker is in her 20’s.

Suitable for: All ages

Level of Difficulty:  7/10 – character driven comedy – both the main characters are hardened women with very dry tongues and it is the way the lines are delivered that makes this play so funny.

Set:  The entire play takes place on the lower story of Margaret & Leland’s upscale condominium/townhouse: a living room with attached kitchenette. Sliding glass doors run along the back wall of the condo, opening onto a spacious patio; while most of the patio cannot be seen, one might consider placing a few potted plants behind the glass to remind the audience of what lies beyond. A front door opens at stage right. The living room is furnished in the modernist style (sofa, coffee table, Barcelona chairs, end table with lamp and telephone), but the space appears cold and austere, with few personal effects. In a corner of the living room, a framed painting conceals a wall safe; alternatively, a free-standing safe is visible. The kitchenette appears immaculately clean and well-ordered, as pristine as a model kitchen in a showroom.

What’s on your mind? A comedy of the absurd

WHAT’S ON YOUR MIND – a comedy of the absurd

Seven zany characters converge on the living room of an ordinary middle class house. All the characters are written as humorous  over the top caricatures of normal people.  Throughout the play, the fact that many of the characters have been “at” the local Sanitorium, “Sidcup” is mentioned.

The play begins when a young man, Joseph, brings a rumpled middle aged man, Ethelbert to his home, where both his parents and wife, Lanny, a professional wrestler live. Both Joseph and Ethelbert have been “at” Sidcup.  From the start, it is obvious that Ethelbert does not want to be there. All  Ethelbert wants to do is to go back to Sidcup to find his missing shoes.  Ethelbert is then thoroughly alarmed to find that Joseph’s wife, thinks that Ethelbert is her previous husband, “Bertie. ”  Joseph’s parents, Maxine and Elmer also appear to be completely mad and alarm Ethelbert further.

When a young couple, Theo and Ruthie arrive at the house, it adds confusion to the mayhem.   Theo grew up in the house and wants to show it to Ruthie.   Little does he know that his  mother, Maxine still lives there with her new husband, Elmer.

This play won the Eastern Illinois University New Play Competition last year (under the former title ‘THE ROAD TO SIDCUP’) and was subsequently performed as a staged reading at Eastern.

The year is 1937  – before world war two erupts in Europe and anti Jewish sentiment is rife.  Hitler is gaining power and the persecution of the Jews has begun.  Millions of Jews from around Europe have fled their homelands in Poland and Lithuania and moved back to Jerusalem,  the city of their forefathers.
