I have written a number of plays for play festivals, as well as read through hundreds of plays on the internet, and I realized there is gap in the publishing industry where good authors struggle to get their plays published. So I have created an online play publishing company that will publish and sell plays!

The Window – a one act about marriage

comedy play about marriage
THE WINDOW – A one act about marriage

In this one act about marriage, Howie and Sheila have been happily married for about two years and are the typical young upper middle class couple, who go to the gym, eat right and know what they want from life. What Howie wants is to to go the theater, but what Sheila wants, is to knock a big hole into the wall where a painting of Howie’s is, so that she can have a window there instead.

This turns into a domestic spat, which isn’t helped by the arrival of Sheila’s hick cousin, Geri (Jerry), a know it all relation who has come to stay with them.

Leonard has written about a dozen full length plays and somewhat more one act plays. Some have won prizes: full length plays “Laramie, Equal Rights” and “Clara” won awards at the Shoreline Readers Theater, 2009 and 2010, in Washington State. “Road Rage” and “Apartment 4G” won in the 2010-2011 “Ink to Boards” One-Act Play Competition at Wildfire Arts. Several plays have been produced locally in the Seattle, Washington and in New York are others have been read at writers’ workshops, and some at festivals.

The author will allow workshopping of the play, subject to the right of refusal and he must be notified through us of any suggested modifications two weeks in advance.

A HOUSE DIVIDED – A CIVIL WAR PLAY IN FOUR ACTS

This period drama in four acts is set around the time of the American Civil War. It looks at the lives of ordinary Americans, as well as that of the President and his wife. It examines how the war affected everyone, from the common soldier, the President and his family, to the Sioux Indians and Negroes now fighting in the war that was meant to free them.  And although many people were crying out for an end to the war, it continued to its inevitable conclusion. Gabriella brings her idiot boyfriend Guy along for support in her scheming.  As soon as everyone arrives Christa and Lynn plot to steal the real will and replace it with a false one.  Meanwhile, Guy and Gabriella have their own intentions of stealing the will.  The only problem is that since the will was in a sealed envelope, Hazel, the delightfully unintelligent maid mailed it.  And to make matters worse, Erica, a young woman with a vendetta against the late Mr. Aldenbrooke shows up with a gun demanding money for her own father’s death which she claims Arthur was responsible for.

Genre: Crime,Whodunit, Comedy

Type: Two act play

Number of Actors:  4M, 5F.
The roles of the clowns have been written with the intention that they all be played by one Actor and one Actress with minimal costume and wig changes to heighten the confusion and frustration as it builds throughout the play. However, it is recognized that individual producers, such as school and community theatre groups may wish to expand the cast size by having these roles be played by different actors and actresses, or have some of the roles played by actresses rather than actors or vice versa. This decision is entirely permitted by the author and is left up to the individual producers.

Ages of actors: One policeman in his thirties, and one male and female character each in their thirties. The clowns can be of any age.

Set:  Various different rooms at a police station in any “small town U.S.A.” and at the big top circus. The sets should be suggested with as simple set pieces as possible. Many of the locales can simply be suggested with lighting changes and/or with as little as a table and a few chairs as set pieces.
Level of Difficulty:  7/10 – especially if the same actor is playing multiple roles

In this one act farce, set in a studio in a radio station in the 1940’s, the cast of a popular radio show are held hostage by one of the show’s sponsors, Monty Navoli, who is furious that the show has been cancelled, and who also, unfortunately, appears to be a member of the mob.  When it is discovered that the producer of the show, Walter St. Paul, has taken Monty Navoli’s money and spent it himself, Monty threatens to shoot him unless the show goes on air one last time. It all falls hilariously apart as the actors struggle to produce a whole show with only a few pages of script, no sound man and a gun pointed at their heads.

The play was selected as a finalist in Riant Theatre’s 2008 Strawberry One-Act Festival, and placed second in the Little Theatre of Alexandria’s 2009 one-act playwriting competition.

FOULWEATHER FRIEND – A TWO ACT DARK COMEDY

Foulweather Friend,  a two act dark comedy, is set in a forgotten hamlet in 1957 Vermont. The town is slowly crumbling around its last remaining living inhabitants.  A community theatre company persists in producing plays even though most of the subscription audience are in the graveyard and might, to be fair, require they be exhumed.  (At the very least they’ll have a full audience that way.)  They are in the process of rehearsing their latest play, “Foulweather Friend,” when a mysterious young playwright,  Pegeen Dalrymple, arrives in town.  But is she who she says she is? And what does she want? Family issues collide with the supernatural including Druidism in this full length play.

RESTAURANTS AT BEAUTIFUL TIMES – ONE ACT DRAMA FOR FOUR ACTORS

In this one act drama for four actors, the stage and the actor’s lives are divided into the ‘restaurant’ and the ‘place where the food is prepared.’   Jean and Myceneaus live and work in the place where the food is prepared. They have never known another existence, and theirs is grim existence at best.  Their only interaction is with the head waiter who liaises between both sides of the stage – both worlds, as it were.  This one act drama for four actors compares the worlds of the very rich and the very poor, and plays on the fact that neither side has any no idea what happens on ‘the other side.’  The play has been produced in Las Vegas by the Nevada Conservatory Theatre and in New York by Working Man’s Clothes thus far.

DISNEY IN DEUTSCHLAND – DRAMA PLAY ABOUT HITLER + WALT DISNEY

In August, 1935, Walt Disney and his wife Lillian were invited by the League of Nations (in Paris) to receive a prize for the international popularity of Mickey Mouse.  As this was Walt’s first holiday in years, he suggested they make it a tour of Europe.  The well-known animator was invited by dignitaries of all sorts, including Mussolini.  The Volkische Beobachter, the official newspaper in the new Nazi Germany, welcomed Disney as ‘a hero against the Jews of Hollywood,’ and it is recorded that he met with Hitler in Munich.  What they said at their meeting, and precisely where it happened, is still unclear, but Disney was known to have admired Hitler back in the US, even attending bund rallies in support of the Nazis.  (See DISNEY’S WORLD by Leonard Mosley, and other sources).  Disney also expressed antipathy toward the growing union movements in the Hollywood studios, calling them a Jewish conspiracy.  And indeed, in 1938, Disney invited Nazi filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl to Hollywood, where her visit was roundly boycotted by other studio heads.

The Neutschwanstein Castle (referred to in the play) was designed by Ludwig of Bavaria in the 1860s, to celebrate the music dramas of Richard Wagner.  This castle’s design is remarkably similar to the Sleeping Beauty castle used in most Disney theme parks to this day; and it was one of the Fuhrer’s favourite places. ‘Disney in Deutschland’ is a full length one act biography based on these very events. Warning: Because of  the nature of the play about Hitler and Walt Disney, the characters it contains do make some anti Semitic remarks and references, which may offend sensitive readers.

Unfortunately things are not going as smoothly as they could hope –  the baddies are plotting their revenge and escape from rehab, aided by the evil Claude Frollo, who runs the rehabilitation centre. They plan to attack the ‘goodies’ and take over Camelot. Who will win this final battle between good and evil?

“Carnivals of the Heart,” a young amateur theatre group based in Somerset-West,  performed AEA in December 2011. The play contains songs from popular music and popular animated movies. The musical rights for these songs would have to be purchased from the relevant local musical licensing authority or the songs substituted.  The authors will allow workshopping of the play with their permission, but the title is not to be changed.
